An Innocent Man

Today I killed an innocent man    He was some kind of prophet born in Bethlehem

I was confused and didn’t understand     why the crowds yelled “crucify Him”

For what crime has this man done             to receive such a punishment?

To peace through the land                I was told to kill -- an innocent man

V 1

When He drug his cross -- down the city street     I saw His life blood -- dripping on His feet

I thought the crown on Him --was a little too bold --but as a Roman soldier--I do as I’m told

The angry crowd spit -- and cursed His name—how could the healer -- deserve such shame

Just how bad --- could this man be                                    for no one deserves to die at Calvary?

* Chorus1*

V 2

When we drove the nails --- into His hands --- He cried “forgive them --- they don’t understand!”

The ground beneath us --- began to shake        I saw the temple walls --- crumble and break

As I pulled my spear --- from His side         cleansing water --- sprayed into my eyes

Then I realized ---  that this man died -------------    for the sins of you and I

                                    * Chorus 2*

Today I killed an innocent man       He was the messiah who died and rose again

He took on all the sins of man     to deliver us to the Promised Land

I know someday when I die      I’ll look again               into His eyes

I have faith He’ll understand                     why I had to kill               an innocent man

                                           *repeat chorus 2*
